Which electric charger installation do you want?

electric charger installation

What advice would I give you if you were looking for an electric charger installation?

I’d not bother telling you what I think, I’d tell you about things from my wife’s perspective, because it gives an unbiased view how people really think when they want an electric car charger for home.

Interestingly it wasn’t price driven – to be honest – it wasn’t even aesthetics driven.

It was ‘how can I hide the damn thing’ as I don’t want an ugly (no matter the colour or design) box on the front / side of the house.

In the end she (not me) decided on a small black unit that fitted on the inside of the gate post, and could be partially hidden by an existing tall and wide potted bamboo.

She chose a socketed EV charger (use your own charging cable), as she didn’t want any cables showing when not charging – to the point – where she’d accept getting soaked on rainy days, whilst rummaging in the boot of the car trying to find the charging cable.

It was no simple or cheap install though – it wasn’t an expensive charger – in fact it’s one of the cheapest electric vehicle charging points we provide. But it needed to be placed 15-metre away from the electricity supply.

Which doesn’t sound like a big job, except it was 15-metre across our manicured lawn.

This is my wife’s domain, she painstakingly manicures our lawn, and not only are we installing an unsightly (her opinion) thing, we’re having to dig a 15-metre deep trench through her painstakingly manicured lawn.

In total (including the dig) the installation took a full day, making it much more expensive than if we’d placed it on the side of the house (being a bloke, this is what I’d have done).

But doing it this way made my wife happy (aside of digging a hole through the lawn), and allowed me to install an EV charger.

Which is turn has led us – to do the right thing – and swap our two gas guzzlers for electric vehicles.

When it comes to advice, we can tell you the features and benefits of each charge point, and which electric charger installation you need.

But we can’t work out which electric charger installation you actually want, because want and need are two completely different things.

…and I always let my wife have what she wants (within monetary boundaries lol)
