Being based in the North West of England, we experience a LOT of rain throughout the year. This means that when we are talking to our customers we are often asked “is it safe to charge my EV when it’s raining?”. This is a perfectly reasonable question to ask, considering that we are all taught that electricity and water do not go together!
All home EV chargers and cables are required to meet stringent electrical safety standards. The requirement to be able to withstand all weather conditions, including rain, is crucial to a product being allowed to be sold in the UK.
Some customers are worried about the risk of electrocution whilst charging their EV in the rain. Home electric charging points are designed so that the electrical current doesn’t begin transmitting until your EV is completely plugged in. This means that it is perfectly safe to charge your electric vehicle even when it is raining.
Keeping rain/water out of your home electric charging point
All of our home charge points have an Ingress Protection (IP) rating which tells the customer how effective the chargepoint is at keeping out water and dust particles whilst you charge. To give you an idea, the average Type 2 charger has an IP of 44. All of our home electric car chargers have a minimum IP of 54.
In addition all of our installers are fully qualified electricians, trained to carry out the installation of your home EV charger to the very highest safety standards.
With all of this in mind, you can rest assured that you can safely charge your electric vehicle in any weather, inside your garage or outside on your parking area.
